what :: the site

shatterbelt refers to space caught among competing people, economies, political interests, topographies, and powerhouses — a perfect definition for neighborhoods throughout much of South Florida.

this project focuses on Miami-Dade County, home to 34 municipalities, old and new immigrant groups, and always influenced by changing socio-cultural positions throughout Latin America.

a global region with its own competing cultural, political, and social pressures, Miami is a perfect spot for shatterbe.lt, a site designed to merge scholarship and multimedia storytelling to uncover and debate the effects of contested space.

shatterbe.lt is used to host research and community work that explores the complex cartographies within and around Miami.

Moses Shumow and Robert E. Gutsche Jr., both journalism and digital media professors at Florida International University, organize this site.  blame them for any problems.
